Virden is a small community of less than 4,000 residents that spans two counties, Macoupin and Sangamon. The town became a hub of activity after the 1850s, when the railroad was completed, and it became very profitable to begin mining the coal located in the area. A strike at the mine nearly ended the town, and as a reminder of that bleak time. Today, a monument to the strike, the Battle of Virden, and those who lost their lives there in 1898. The Virden History Mural, located on Route 66, depicts the battle that took place in this small community.
